Prospective students

I receive many inquiries each year about graduate study in UF Political Science. Prospective students should know that admissions decisions are made by the department, not by individual faculty. I cannot review individual applications, evaluate fit before you apply, or take meetings with prospective applicants. If you are interested in working with me or any of my colleagues, please indicate it in your statement of purpose. The information below covers what I am asked most often.

Most importantly, the GRE is required for all graduate applicants to our department. Full application instructions for both programs are at the UF Political Science graduate admissions page.

Ph.D. program

  • Application deadline: December 15.
  • Funding: Competitive packages including tuition waivers and stipends.
  • Fields: American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory, and Political Methodology. Our department’s research clusters include the Artificial Intelligence Lab, the East European Politics Group, the Election Lab, and the Violence, Conflict, and Security Studies Lab.
  • Contacting faculty in advance? Please note potential advisors in your statement of purpose.
  • Will you review my CV or statement of purpose before I apply? No. All materials go through the formal admissions review.

M.A. programs

UF Political Science offers a General M.A. in Political Science, an M.A. in International Relations, an M.A. in Political Campaigning, and a combined M.A./J.D. with the UF College of Law. Interdisciplinary certificates are available in Latin American Studies, African Studies, Modern European Studies, Women’s Studies, and Global Islam.

  • Fall deadline: March 15 (General M.A., Political Campaigning, and M.A. in IR).
  • Spring deadline: November 15 (Political Campaigning only).
  • Funding: M.A. students are not typically funded by the department.
  • Application materials: Statement of purpose, CV, transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and GRE scores.
